  • The way I always understood the show was that Frank, Dennis, and Dee are sociopaths, Mac would be a good person if he weren't constantly trying to impress the wrong people (mostly Dennis), and Charlie is just too stupid to realize that his friends are abusing him for their own benefit.

  • About Mac coming out. The video could have went deeper. The gang say they've known it forever, since they're childhood friends. So why they don't address it, and let Mac live in his shell. They hate him in spite of his homosexuality. All the gang apart from Frank, who never really got Mac and is relatively new knowing him. So why did the gang not address Mac being gay? Is it to keep him down?

    phil gphil g3 күн мурун
    • They have been acknowledging Mac being gay since like season 2 or 3 when he was with Carmen. They dont care that he's gay but he so catholic that he hates himself for being gay and they all hate themselves in different ways so they dont always go out of the way to so they care about mac being gay. It's just something he is but it's not who he is in their eyes.

  • I think that they are bad people because of the group but the group is also bad because they're bad people. it's a runaway interplay of bad influences and bad decisions, the kind of positive feedback loop that is the only thing that can make this kind of terrible rabbit hole. This is why we need to learn to recognize problems early and either make sure we deal with them before they escalate or make sure we stay in a position where we can deal with them when they escalate.

  • I've never seen the show but i think not getting the proper recognition at a young age can be a kind of trauma. And we need to claw out of a deep hole and begin to force a new story of who we want to be and think we can be. I would guess %10 of people really get the self esteem from their upbringing to slide easily into self sustaining inner knowing and recognition... But there's always speed bumps, even in a perfect scenario. We are never who we think we are at first, because so much of us is a choice, and yet some fundamental morsels are immutable. It's only when we accept the unknown that the boulder goes over the hill and we get to meet ourselves... The self we have always been, the self we can and want to be, and the self we just are by accident in New situations. The lines are blurry. It's a journey towards meta-recognition... Love is like a flame. We need help getting it started but once it's burning in us, we can light the fire for others, with no cost to our own flame 🔥. I love your videos.

I do have friends, too many actually, but I don't go looking for them. They come to me for help or advice. Maybe it's because every time I go to one of them they always fail me. I've lost two jobs because two different friends didn't give me a ride to work like they said they would.

  • This is another excellent video from Wisecrack. Michael and team, you hit it on this one. I love that you guys did the readings and applied the ideas to popular culture and one of my favorite shows. I love this video and I hope this comment is humble and shows my commitment to the writers and host of this show. What's missing? The premise of the show is not supposed to be an ideal (important: not Philosophical Ideal) of what we are supposed to be. It's supposed to be something to laugh at. That would mean the title of the video is a category mistake-- not how "your friends" ruin you, but rather how the situation comedy television show's characters ruin each other. This is an example of Hegelian Negation -- expressed in the Slavoj Zizek joke, "Question: Did you hear about Hegel and Negation?" "Answer: No, what is it?" Likewise, philosophy always forgets desire, after Foucault's seminar, The Will to Know. I think it's just way too easy to say after Sartre that Hell is other People (from the stage play, "No Exit"). We know from doing the readings and living in real life that heaven is other people too. Here's the Hegelian Negation to finish my comment here. I wish Wisecrack would sometimes do the critical flip -- in Hegel, sometimes translated as an inflection. In the video, Michael mentions that Seinfeld, Cheers, and other situation comedies are based around arbitrary relationships. Guess what? Love is what makes the game, and not the other way around (Kant, Critique of Pure Reason). That goes for you, your friends, me, all of my friends, everybody. All of this bullshit is arbitrary when you subtract love. It's all a stupid game. Nietzsche, "A person's game is weak without love." The video, the comments, the politics, the news, everything.

  • The thing is, this kind of sit-com setup is pretty normal, terrible people not really helping each other out but just staying together out of familiarity or desperation, just not in the States but across the pond in the UK. Most of our major sit-coms have this kind of set-up, including the original British Office. I think its one of the reasons Brits on whole are actually quite big fans of Always Sunny, even if other American comedies don't really do much for us.

Anarchy is the only way to have TRUE freedom, peace, and prosperity, and is the only truly moral form of "government", because there is no government.

  • Charlie is the most tragic character on the show. His mother could've raked in child support from Frank, but instead relied on prostitution and let his uncle molest him. This made him turn to huffing glue which impaired his brain development. He found validation among his peers who liked to laugh at his wacky behavior without addressing its underlying causes. He shows moments of compassion, but has no idea what real love looks like resulting in terrible (but always hilarious) decision making.

  • ”Always sunny In Philadelphia” it’s a show about trauma. People coping with it, reliving it, and even sometimes overcoming it. They’re not so much bad people as they are wounded and acting out. They’ve been traumatized. Some of that trauma is shared too, in the cases of Dennis and Dee. Mac and Charlie have been friends since childhood, and is rooted in commiserating about their perspective traumas. Frank was in an insane asylum. That’s why they cling to each other. Even after despicable betrayals, they are brought back into the fold of and resume their place in the group because subconsciously they know the others trauma and understand. Their schemes, their delusions, their worldview, all comes from a place of tragedy and pain. Buried beneath all the calamity there are genuine moments of sentimentality, and affection between the characters. Tangentially, it is the only show I know of brave enough to go full throttle with mining tragedy for comedy. It’s not dark just for edginess sake, like Southpark. It really gets in the shit. While absurd at times, it always feels genuine. It’s always raw. I think that what turns some people off. Some folks can’t go there...or know how to access that part of themselves. But I find it cathartic. I know these people. I’ve been these people. I get it.
