  • These days, reboots are inevitable. What property are you surprised HASN'T been rebooted yet?

    • Too many things have had... let's call them them "poor" reboots. Poor enough that I forget they've been rebooted. I literally just thought of 3 IP's that I would like to see rebooted, that I then remembered had already been rebooted and cancelled. "This recipe seemed to work great back then, so lets change the core of what made it work, and rake in the cash!"

  • When talking about nostalgia and being hung up on their[Johnny and Daniel's] golden years an important point is that Kreese is also like this in a way. He is a war vet, most likely with some kind of PTSD who thinks he needs to train people(in this case, children) for war. It's why his way of trying to convince Johnny to join him is all about remembering & reliving the past. So Kreese is what an even older Johnny would potentially look like if he didn't begin to change.

  • Cobra Kai is my favourite show of the past three years. It hits all the right nostalgia points, it's JUST cheesy enough, and it's extremely well written and acted and all around entertaining. I love that it looks at the themes of bullying and toxic masculinity that the originals did, and shines them through a modern lens. Props especially to William Zabka and the writers, for taking a cookie cutter 80s high school bully and walking trope, and making him a very real, very flawed human being.

  • I think one of the greatest things about Cobra Kai is subverting your expectations from the start, by turning Johnny into the main hero and Daniel into the bully. They swapped positions, Daniel even forgot what Miyagi-Do was all about, and that struck me deeply because it's a story I can relate to in real life. The show made me think of Yin Yang ALOT while watching it, Daniel and Johnny obviously try to be better persons but are somewhat lost and therefor act for the wrong reasons, but Kreese is obviously bad and likes being bad, even though he spreads negativity for the right reasons (protecting those who are being manipulated and abused, like he was). I also love the cyberbullying aspect, because otherwise it would exactly be that stereotypical nostalgic show that only caters to 80's kids, but completely alienates the current generation of teenagers for that purpose. This is the perfect show for kids who grew up with Karate Kid who want to share their precious memories with kids of their own. It abridges generations and that's something we could use more of in our current society where everyone is isolated within their own media chamber. The only thing I'd disagree on is the fight between Johnny and Kreese being displayed as cheesy. This is an essential fight to Johnny's arc and it felt epic too. Finally he's standing up against his own bully and taking responsibility to protect his son.

  • I like the series. Season 3, to me, the best part was when Daniel went to Okinawa. The rest of the episodes, doesn't feel as strong. And in today's society, there is a tremendous amount of suspending of disbelief that is asked for, when it comes to the fights, the choreography and the lack of the follow up accountability - maybe a bit too much. But I think overall, it does a good job attracting a new generation to this iconic film franchise.

  • Karate Kid like a lot of other 80's Karate movies is really only enjoyable to watch by today's standards for comedic purposes. I think the series is good because it can make fun of itself, and acknowledges the shallow one-sidedness of the previous films. As it adds depth to characters, and through this, revives an old narrative with a fuller perspective and is without a doubt one of my favorite reboots.

  • There’s so much else to unpack with this show, too. The season 1 finale’s rehash of the movie’s climax brilliantly shows the hero’s victory as one of discomfort and tragedy- he won, but at cost of his empathy. And in season 2, his decision to show mercy to his rival instead lands him in a coma-he showed empathy, but nearly at the cost of his life. There’s so many themes about classism and how morality & ethics treat the poor differently than the rich. Plus the season 3 finale has an epically choreographed fight scene filmed in an astounding 90-second one take. The whole show is brilliant.

    Luke WilsonLuke Wilson2 ай мурун
  • They took a basic one dimensional characters struggle of Daniel vs. Johnny and gave the characters more depth and real backstory. Daniel though wasn't really an outcast like the newer members of Cobra Kai and definitely Johnny wasn't as mean spirited as the new bullies in the show. Yeah most nostalgia seems force fed but I like how they changed the storyline around. Now the struggle is against Creese who is more a villian and evil than Johnny ever was. I'm not a big fan of cheesy reboots as most of the old properties were utter crap like Full House and Saved By the Bell. I'm looking forward to see where they take the show next season. It's tough to keep a good storyline going for multiple seasons.

  • Obviously not absolutely everything is right Johnny's worldview but our hypersensitive totalitarian culture could use a couple of doses of Johnny and a dose or two of Daniel along with several doses of Miyagi. You claim to embrace Miyagi, your crowd doesn't understand the first thing about a man like Miyagi. Miyagi knew the value of mercy for starters and always sought peace with his enemies.

  • I honestly think the show critiques the past (& nostalgia) as well as modern trends & ideas - and uses characters stuck between past & present to examine both. For example, the ongoing "hollow anti-bullying" drives at the school, in which its basically a running joke that the teachers don't care about the emotional well being of their students, only maintaining the right public image. Its "progress" that doesn't actually empower the students who are being bullied.

  • Well thought and and written trips back like Cobra Kai work. Trying to re-capture lightning in a bottle by the reboot (recreate) route - doesn't. Hollywood does definitely need some original content. I enjoyed Cobra Kai for both the nostalgia and the character growth / writing. I was a teenager in the 80's, love hair-metal and hated 90's music / culture (ORIGINALLY), but I can see the flaws from that time (I had to have those flaws literally shoved in my face by the wife basically telling me to 'get over it'. Still love the nostalgia trips though, just try not to live in them.

  • Nostalgia, in my opinion, can be the worst thing for a franchise. Writers are forced into constraints that prevent them putting their own creativity, storing will feel same and characters will never change leaving behind a soulless cash grab. Fans also make this worse, when they refuse to have franchise change. Mortal Kombat fans want a remaster of their favourite of games, not new installments

Movies that portend futuristic dystopian worlds do this. People who make period films(e.g., westerns, war movies, classics, etc.) sell the PAST. • the only reason ANYTHING should be rebooted is if they are going to recontextualize and examine it within the lense of Today. there's so much toxic masculinity messaging (and casual homophobia, misogyny, etc) in popular 80s films of yesteryear. so its great to see some of that addressed here. seeing a beloved property both criticized and appreciated, deconstructed and then reconstructed is so great. and i only wish they had ACTUAL asian (japanese specifically) characters in the reboot cause well that was a major oversight before tho at least the cast isnt all white people. but yeah like, all these reboots trying to replicate something from 20 or more years ago as if nothing has changed are often so bland and pointless. failing to realize why those properties resonated so well with the public at the time to begin with. sick of it tbh. even the reboots that i was originally excited about were disappointing let alone all the ones that were just unecessary from the get go. basically unless the writers want to pull a Cobra Kai like narrative then i dont need to see a remake or reboot of anything else. if u gonna resurrect an old franchise from the grave than do something interesting with it!

  • My memory of these films is a bit weird. I had been getting bullied in school for most of my life. My parents even switched schools in an attemt to make it stop, mostly because I refused to go to school anymore. So by the time I was nine I told a therapist about this problem and how my very christian strategy of turning the other cheek hadn't been getting me the results I desired. So she suggested that I fight back. So I left that therapy session, went to the video rental store (it was 1990) and rented the whole trilogy, took it home and binge watched it. The next day I went to school and resess came along. First bully showed up and I decided to fight back. Funny thing when you have autism, those natural restrictions on your muscle strength designed to protect your body from damaging itself don't always work, like for instance when you are angry. I went berserk. I only have a vague recollection of the fight, all I know is that I saw red, venting years of internalised anger and frustration and 6 kids needed to see the nurse for a myriad of mild to serious injuries. I even ripped one kids jeans in half while he was wearing them. I wouldn't recommend this to anyone. While it worked, no one bullied me anymore after that, I was just as socially isolated being feared as I had been being awkward. Maybe more so. At the same time, the peace and quiet were a lifesaver. So my feelings about these movies are kind of heavily coloured by that experience and seeing Johnny struggle through this series with his own relationship to violence kind of resonated with the space in my life those movies hold. So for me it's a nostalgia hit. Albeit a complicated one.

  • I finished season three. I must admit way back when they announced Cobra Kai, I was very skeptical about it working but now I'm a big fan of the series. Johnny's character just gets better and better and has a very satisfying arc from villain to hero - and the show earns this as he doesn't do an instant flip flop. Miguel and Johnny's relationship is great. Daniel and family are terrific (minus the snot nosed kid who thankfully has just one scene this season if I recall correctly). Regarding the last scene. Christ, that was pure gold. Daniel and students from all dojos at Miyagi-Do, Phil Collins' In the Air Tonight playing, ... and then Johnny walking in frame just when the heavy drums get rolling. Gold! Is it camp? Maybe. Does it work? Most definitely. Regarding camp, I think it has just the right amount and the show is very self aware that it has some ridiculous situations yet it works for me. I think the show is a very good example on how to bring back a decades old movie series, update its characters and continue their paths in satisfying ways, and introduce new characters that are actually interesting. You know, instead of subverting expectations (snicker, snicker), just maybe listen to your fans and surpass expectations - without taking a huge shit on the movies that came before. Cough, cough, Luke, Leia , Han, Rey cough, cough, puke ...

Fans has been challenging the movie for decades and probably sums it up in a place like reddit. Emergence of Netflix finally allow directors to take this kind of risk, other greenlighted series in Netflix have much shallow premise. Season 2 is where the brilliance comes in, as the team need to produce a new story aside from fan theories. Another surpirse are these actors still have it after so many years.

My only complaints is the show tends to go full CW with the kids, and my God they leveled up from nerds to pulling moves straight outta Dragon Ball Z in almost no time flat and it becomes High School Musical but with karate a bit too often.
