Cyberpunk 2077 loves to reference philosophers ... but does it actually have a philosophy of its own?

Cyberpunk 2077 has had a lot of people talking - mostly about its fiasco of a rollout. But once you're able to get the game to work, you'll find that it's exploding with sly references to everyone from author Ernest Hemingway to philosopher Descartes. So is the game actually as smart as it thinks it is? Let's find out in this Wisecrack Edition on Cyberpunk 2077: Deep or Dumb?

    • I'm hoping they continue developing stories in this universe because, like you said, if there was a bit more time to go in depth and really explore the ideas as well as the ramifications of this type of technology, we could get something truly groundbreaking. With that said, I still loved the game (probably in part because I didn't get it until after the major game breaking bugs were fixed.)

  • Calling it dumb is pretty disingenuous. I feel the point is to not answer any of these questions, partly from a game play stand point but also philosophical. These questions arent something easily answered and can often be defined differently by each person.

  • Did previous cyberpunk works provide answers to the questions that 2077 "copies" and raises? No. It raised them in situations in the context of the narrative for us to think about because, a lot of the time, these questions have no right or wrong answer. 2077 provides quite a few interesting scenarios about a number of different ideas, doesn't spell it out for us and instead leaves us to ponder it. Don't think it's fair to criticise 2077 for not providing answers, because it definitely portrays and discusses the questions it raises. Just through the gameplay and story. For the people in the city, many of these things are normal so it's up to us the player to think, oh... That's weird I need to process this. Just because the character models in the screen don't engage in discussion or voice questions doesn't.mean the game is shallow. The world is the discussion. The story is the discussion. A case study for us to examine ourselves. I would argue the point of philosophy is to dwell of these questions so that we question our own beliefs and ourselves so that we may learn more about our own existence so just because these questions have been raised before ( in novels last century and by philosophers 100s of years ago) it doesn't invalidate their inclusion, nor does it make it lazy.

  • I actually think what makes Cyberpunk unique is that its main focus seems to be on people, relationships and self worth. I think since it doesnt touch too much conventional Cyberpunk tropes, it sets it apart from the crowd. It feels more like a Coming-of-Age story in the midst of a dreadful landscape.

I've noticed Wisecrack hasn't done any videos on Death Stranding which is a properly functioning game but it's fanbase claims that it's the most intelligent philosophical game ever made yet I don't hear anyone talking about it in any eloquent way.

  • I wouldn’t say Cyberpunk 2077 is dumb, but I would agree that it’s a missed opportunity. I say it’s not dumb because the game doesn’t outright say really stupid things as much as it doesn’t say a lot to begin with. But the fact that it doesn’t explore its themes as mechanically or narratively as much as, say, a SOMA or a Nier Automata doesn’t mean it’s dumb (or that it’s bad, for that matter). It’s just that the goals the game set out to achieve were somewhat different. My understanding of the Cyberpunk franchise is that Mike Pondsmith wanted an RPG with Blade Runner’s aesthetic, but also recognized that a protagonist in such a setting has too little agency to befit a role-played game. He then added more rock ‘n’ roll to counteract that, ending up with protagonists like Johnny and V and stories like Cyberpunk 2077. And looking at it from that angle, yeah, I’d say this game is successful (although not philosophically all that meaningful).

  • Video suffers from the format as it has a black and white/deep or dumb/right or wrong approach. It presumes, that the 'source material' (Locke, neuromancer, other philosophers) is necessarily 'deep' all the time. While surely a lot of the questions that are posed (eg. theseus' ship) are complex dilemmas that can not be truly solved in a satisfying way, it can also be said that Ideas of the "source material" are outdated (eg. Descartes. Tania Singer found that brain plasticity is influenced by behaviour. So its proven that physical brain and thinking mind are connected) or not 'deep' themselves. Still enjoyed your analysis. But maybe you're also (perhaps knowingly) asking to much from a video game plot, that needs to primarily entertain. For what it is, i find it super compelling and contemporary. Which (at least mainstream) title ever allowed you to play as a trans-person or date a depressed porn-editor? How would you package a critical analysis of abstract concepts of identity in a format like this? Its not a dissertation, its a video game and at that one. Also you missed a few points as @VaeSapiens alrady pointed out. Thanks still! Good channel

  • I am so tried of idiots thinking misplaced and clearly misunderstood philosophical (at best and at worst respectively) references somehow makes something better or smarter than it really is. Worse still is when they take those grossly misused and overused bits and attempt to use them with motivations of self aggrandization. Worse greater still is when the lack of contextual information or more likely the source material at all. This false intellectualism is a big contributor to many "movements" that would have people think they are informed and moral in their understanding of their cause when in fact they have all the intellectual credibility of a Qanon believer.

But instead it's a well-fleshed out character like Johnny against the human equivalent of wallpaper-paste. There is a specific side mission in regards to God and religion that raises the question of “Johnny” is even alive anymore. That all is left is a digital ghost echoing. A lot of side missions tie into the main theme of this game and I feel not discussing them caused y’all to kinda miss the point. There is no answer to these questions of consciousness and soul and identity. Only more questions we can raise. Which is why CDPR has no answers.

Sure, some big titles might offer insights, but most seem to just tell a story based around hypotheticals and thought experiments. I never thought they needed to try to answer the questions or delve deeper, they just needed to inspire imagination and thought in those areas. Discovering your own answers is the cyberpunk way. Unplug and whatnot.

  • TL;DR probably it's as deep as we needed, more in a social/moral pov than ethics or "EGO" conflict. What does it mean to act bad or good? (even while other games could do this better) It's as deep as it can, man. If people in CP77 started arguing what is self and what is not, why it is not or so, it would become metal gear 6. Saying this because we should understand how philosophy blends so good in a game and at the same time how it pushes away a big slice of the audience, especially after we played CP77. Masses in 2021 aren't exactly deep, but in 2077, they are more nuts than before, as they can't focus on details and would forget the damn critical bad things they are witnessing, they're attention drawn on ads, and, guess what, their * self *. All of this maintaining a punk atmosphere. As far as we know, CP aims to be a twisted and creepy description of what we are not yet, while we despise it, and yet, desperately aiming to. How can this objectively be dumb? Love you, sorry for the ranting colors, my English is rusted
