  • Review weeknd trilogy mixtapes. I think itll be interesting.🙌

  • I really think you should deduct points for sameness/lack of originality. Most of these songs sounded more or less the same. A top 10 in the 80s or 90s would have radical differences like comparing Def Leppard to Cheryl Crow to Michael Jackson. This stuff (with one or two exceptions) is all the same.

    machrisr2000machrisr200029 мүнөт мурун
  • Apart from the first song, the rest is just more of the same repetitive, simplistic, self-similar, recursive, unmelodic CRAP of the past 20 years that has caused me to despair as to how "pop"ular music will ever recover from this malaise -- and I don't give a flying f*** how well-produced they are!

  • Wow there has actually been some improvement! Nothing that that blows your socks out, but for a normal pop song many of those were quite nice. If I heard one from the radio I probably would keep the radio on... if I listened to radio that is.

Elly Bird GuitarElly Bird Guitar10 саат мурун
  • Pretty simplistic both in chord progressions and production (with the exception of creepy girl and her brother good production). What's up with going up and down the neck playing bar chords? Try playing a barred C position a half step higher instead of the E and A versions of guitar chords? Did I hear a diminished? Wow! Pop music!? I agree that the mastering is way too hot on some tunes. Isn't there some standard so we don't have to keep playing with levels for the listener? All in all I enjoy the concept of your reviewing pop. In all seriousness, I enjoyed your helping non musicians understand just how easy musicians with trained ears can pick apart songs on the fly. For me, it's too simple and boring. You did a great job trying to enjoy it. Again, play guitar like a real guitar player and stop being a bar chord player? How 'bout a Bm7 in starting from the second fret with your middle finger on low B? Also, do you always have to ring a low G every time you play C? What are you some kind of folk/country guy now!? lol Gotta give you flack for something. Best wishes!

The top 10 is actually pretty good and Rick kills all of em

  • Yep agreed, I hadn't really had my ears turned by the likes of these artists until recently, but definitely thought some of the song writing has improved. Heard a new Sam Smith song recently & I can't stand him but thought the tune was impressive. Seems like decent song writing is definitely coming back after a good twenty years at least.

  • The #3 song is just so autotuned... it hurts a bit. Also, I've always thought that Billie Eilish could have been a bit more successful if she never got that angsty persona and just was a more...normal... singer. Because her voice is damn gorgeous, but she wastes it a bit by taking this angsty persona that drives a lot of people off.

I'm a Google/KGworld music subscriber myself and noticed a couple of differences in the charts. I assume there are also Spotify and KGworld exclusive deals with some artists too.

I enjoyed the video of your son's ear training--it's wonderful--definitely a testament to your ear training videos. Most important, I like that you stay current and fuse your love of music and your knowledge of the music industry and music theory for those of us that don't have the time to tackle what's happen in pop music today. You're my "Clark Howard (financial guru) making you my favorite sage of music theory and the music industry. After a day of work, I eagerly look forward to your weekly music theory videos and your take on what's good or bad in the music industry and the direction it's heading. Please don't stop....

  • I disagree. I love how loud the drums are on that Sean Mendes track. With how light and ethereal the rest of the instrumental is, I think it creates this feeling that you're trudging through the mud, boots heavy from the water. Stomping through your self loathing (in the context of the track.) Now you're the producer so if you think it's too loud it might be. But it's my opinion that if the drums weren't as loud that track wouldn't be nearly as good.

  • I like the melody of the newer songs but the vibrato overkill by some of the singers just destroys the feel. Its like adding too much salt to a meal in my opinion. And another thing I noticed is how much fuller some of these songs sound when the guitar is played with them. Apart from the chords which obviously sound great, I like the part in Billie Eilish's song where Rick plays the notes along with the bass line (10:00), just added a little bit more "oomph" into it, you know what I mean? sounds really dull without it.
