Wind turbines have emergency exits, but they might not be for the reason you think. • Thanks to Octopus Energy: octopus.energy/octopus-fan-club/ (This video isn't sponsored, but obviously they did let me go up their wind turbine.)

  • I couldn't find a way to fit this into the video, but rather wonderfully, this turbine is called Octopus Energy's "#1 Fan". Thanks to all the team there, and the rope access team at EWT. This wasn't sponsored, and Octopus had no control over the final video, but obviously they did let me go up their conveniently-branded wind turbine in an effort to boost their brand. (If any other companies would like to show me around their conveniently-branded spectacular facilities, they should definitely get in touch...!)

  • As a fellow rope tech, I've scrutinized this video and can confirm that the techs are professional and nothing is out of the place. If that sounds like petty behaviour, then maybe consider that scrutinizing your team members is a vital part of the general safety culture needed for this type of work. I personally do echo his statement: "Personally this is safer than any other job that you can do." Well, maybe not all other jobs, but a hell of a lot of them, like driving a bus for instance. As a bit of a side note: Watching this, my girlfriend told me: "I can never do that." to which I said: "IKR! I also hate screw-gate karabiners!!"

  • So judging by the movement of the wires going back up, someone was winding them by hand... Why don't they use those abseil fall arrests that wind the wire back up if there's no weight? Does the weight of a wire that long just make this unrealistic?

  • Wind turbines are ridiculous, hideous and totally inefficient bird killing eye sores. The greenies won't be happy until the entire country is littered with these ugly blots on our landscape. Tens of thousands of Bald Eagles killed already, but hey as long as the leftist ideology is being served... who cares? The cost to build one of these things far exceeds the amount of electricity it can produce before they need to be refurbished every 10 to 20 years. Just plain stupid.

    Jeff RoutledgeJeff Routledge14 саат мурун
  • And to think that this 50 m tall wind turbine is fairly small for current standards! There are already turbines with hub heights around 150 m, not even accounting for the blade length. That's a 50-storey building, truly shocking!
