Dear friends and followers, welcome back to my channel!
Today’s video will all be about hard/bumpy landings. 15 reasons why pilots once in a while land a little harder than usual.
Number 15:
Autoland landing
Autolands can sometimes end up in a harder landing than usual. In very foggy conditions with visibility values lower than what is consider to be flown manually(RVR minimum), pilots have to choose an auto land landing if there plane is equipped and certified for such an approach. The autopilot flies purely by numbers and received signals from the ground which can lead to a shortened flare, ending in a bumpy landing. A mishap showing that the autopilot only flies by the received signals is the Singapore airlines (check) landing at Munich airport, where the pilot disconnected the autopilot too late after landing, and the signal got disturb by another plane, leading to the Triple 777 to swerve off the runway.
Number 14:
Varying landing weight
Your first landing might be close to the maximum landing weight and the next might be with a nearly empty plane. Planes act completely different depending on their landing weight, which might be misjudged by the pilot and ruining his flare!
Number 13:
Different plane types
Some airline pilots are rated on multiple planes. For example when I flew for Airberlin, I was rated on the Airbus A319, 320, 321 and some colleagues even flew the A330 all within one week. Sometimes you switched between different types of aircraft in one day. Each of them flare and obviously weigh differently and can be the cause for a bumpy landing.
Number 12:
Different engine types
Some airlines have an A320 as example with IAE V2500, but in the same fleet others are fitted with CFM Leap engines. Upon flare, the engines react or spool up and down differently, timely speaking, which can lead to an unexpected long flare, a sudden drop in airspeed and bang, your next hard landing.
Number 11:
Density Altitude
When landing in Los Angeles for example with a 747, let’s say you have a ground speed on approach of 150 knots, times 5 equals = 750 feet per minute of descent rate on a 3 degree glideslope. Let’s fly the approach with the same landing weight into Mexico City with an airport elevation of 7300 feet, the air density is much lower, therefore your True Airspeed increases by 2% per 1000 feet, means 7 times 2% equals 14%, so 150 knots times 1.14 equals 171 knots. Let’s say 170 knots times 5 equals 850 feet per minute your descending on the 3 degree glideslope. So effectively 100 feet per minute 20 knots faster, if you don’t anticipate the higher descent rate, bang, harder landing then usual. The same applies for glide slopes which are steeper than normal which result in a higher descent rate!

  • How arrogant can you get? You say passengers can't say what they feel as a "hard-landing" UNLESS THEY CAN DO BETTER THAN THE PILOT??? So unless a passenger is better t han the pilot, the passenger can't say anything about the flight? What kind of thinking is that??? I'd like to ask the airline you're working with now if that's their "official policy" if the passenger is not a better pilot, the passenger should just sit there and keep quiet.

  • Meh. I do blame the F.O. whenever i feel the need. But i never voice it, rather i thank them and get on with my life. I've flown well over a thousand times, I've seen great crews and utter shat crews over the decades. I've flown soo many times that I have become very good at sizing up a Captain's or F.O's ability based on several factors. 1. how kept is the person? While they all have a dress etiquette, ones personal dress mannerisms can generally display more about a person than their uniform. 2. Age. When i see a young F.O. i know theres a much higher percentage of an interesting landing. And I've had some interesting touch downs. Never once given a bad eye to a Captain or F.O after a harsh landing, just thrilled they pulled it off safely. 3. Their hair. This is likely the most telling sign of whether or not you have an experienced pilot or someone middle of the road. You see a high & tight hair cut, He's either retired Air Force or Navy pilot. These guys based on my decades of flying experience have always been the best of the best, and personable to boot. Regardless, hard landing or not, I have always said thank you to any Pilot and F.O. upon landing if they've taken the time to scuttle out of the cockpit. It's not as simple as you may think. Imagine being responsible for 100-200-300+ lives and you know they're ALL trusting you can handle any situation that may arise. Theres pressure on these guys that we take for granted, on each & every flight.

Let me tell you as a left-handed pilot used to flying in the left seat, the right seat is an entirely different feel on the side including the site picture. My landings although not bad are not as smooth in the right seat yet as they are in the left seat.

  • You need to pay more attention to the audio volume uploaded to youtube. Just because it sounds loud on your speakers during editing, does not mean that will be the end result. Professional audio technicians use standards to judge for the correct levels, just like aircraft manufacturers, maintenance and pilots do. Speakers are rubber rulers.

  • I remember years ago experiencing (what seemed like) a hard landing on a Southwest Airlines flight. After the bumpy landing, the head of the flight crew came on the intercom and she announced "That hard landing wasn't the pilot's fault. It wasn't the co-pilot's fault... but rather, it was the asphalt. (S.W. Airlines has always had a sense of humor.) 😅 😂 🤣

  • As a business traveler for the past decade, I've had more than my fair share of landings. Primarily in the B737 air frame (thank you Southwest Airlines!). If it was a smooth landing, I know that my pilot was trained by the US Air Force. A "hard" landing - they are a "Naval Aviator" who is looking to drag a tailhook. p.s. Go Air Force!!!

  • I can parallel park a loaded semi with my eyes closed in any weather or time of day BUT when i get into my pick-up i gotta relearn shifting parking and maneuvering with such a short wheel base 😂😂 i 100000% agree with you joe! And also some days i can one short blindside back into a dock with ease other days i couldnt get it in to save my life! I have great days and off my game days im sure pilots have to deal with that as well lol!

  • I was on a 737 from BNA to Denver and then on to SFO, the pilot circled at Denver due to setting up for a landing due to a cross wind. I thought the wing tip was going to hit the runway! He did an excellent job.! Southwest Airlines has some great Pilots.

  • A hard landing reduces the forward speed by translating its energy into the suspension of the gear and is mostly suitable for shortened runways or when having damaged flaps, where you naturally have a slight overspeed, that you need to eliminate, to not overheat the breaks afterwards, which in itself might cause a fire.

  • As a flight instructor in small general aviation airplanes, I find it easier to control in a strong cross wind. I still approach in a crab but over the numbers I find it no problem, for instance, in a left cross wind , to straighten out with right rudder and left aileron to control the drift. I'm not worried about knocking an engine off of the wing. If the wind changes, I can do a little dance. If I think my feet point the nose and my hands stop the drift, I can usually get a smooth touch down or go around if I don't like it with immediately available power. It's a straight wing airplane. No swept wing issues.. . On the Airbus 320 are you in danger of scraping an engine with that technique? I'm sure that the passengers might feel the dance in a long fuselage more than I do sitting on the vertical, lateral and longitudinal axis.

  • I remember flying BA from Edinburgh to LHR. The weather was fantastically stormy the plane was delayed and they were unsure whether to try. The flight was challenging. When we got to LHR the pilot explained that he would need to approach at an angle to the runway and if successful would perform a hard landing pivoting the plane as it hit the tarmac. Wow it was fantastic placing the plane down firmly, pivoting and doing a fantastic job. On another occasion I was flying on a Nimrod. The pilot approached at 90° to the runway, did a 270° turn and landing on the runway at the end of his turn. It was fun but I'm not sure that those in the Tower were happy. Was the landing from over the sea Madera?

  • can you address the lateral swaying upon landing - is there a computer system to help to offset the severe lateral swaying and how severe of lateral swaying can the landing gear system withstand. With the speed of the plane upon landing and the lateral swaying given the mass of the jumbo jets, it seems that there must be huge amount of stress put upon the landing gear. If you have covered this already please point me to your link. Thanks ....

  • The hardest landing I've ever experienced was flying into SFO. I commented to the pilots while exiting they must have been practicing their carrier landing. It was absolutely jarring, but to a novice, that airport looks like a difficult place to land and may have contributed.

  • Might add to that weight and balance problems and ground crew failing to lock in containers that shift. I would suspect it's not as common an occurrence now but many times back in the DC 10 days it happened far too often. If a pilot believes he has a certain amount of weight in a compartment and its not there or there is too much weight, he'll be as surprised as the passengers when comes down hard.

  • We had a pilot who was joking around telling us we were going to the starship enterprise, when we took off he never even ran the full runway, I ALWAYS record EVERY flight. It was almost like we went straight UP. Then he said we’re about to land on The planet earth and landed SO HARD it shook people who were sleeping! They were super MAD! I knew it was going to happen I never sleep!

  • I took a two engine puddle jumper from Nantucket to Hyannis just before the airports were closed during a violent storm. A 15 minute flight was streched to almost an hour. The little plane hit the landing at almost a 45 degree angle. The pilot and myself were the only ones who didn't upchuck on that very turbulent flight. My waist was bruised because of the seatbelt and some passengers actually hit their heads on the overhead bins. Gusts at landing was over 70 mph with sustained winds of 60.

  • Great video Captain Joe ! There is another factor that can lead to a firm landing : the runway width. A standard runway width is about 45 meters and so the pilots eyes are used the image of this kind of runway. But some airports have 60 meters wide runways, which gives the pilots an impression of being low and they would start an early flare. This could lead to a firm landing for the same reason as for a runway with a downslope. On the opposite, some smaller airports have 30 meters wide runways ( minimum allowed width for the A320). There, the pilots have an impression of being high over the threshold and might start the flare too late...

Further reasons: most of your claims are bad excuses behind a pilot having a bad day. Different weights or any other possible divergence in aircraft performance is the daily life of a professional pilot and the normal is in fact that nothing is normal. And that bring us to the profiency level of a pilot, which should be able, most of the times, to make reasonable good landings, if he or her just take the efforts to do so. Exactly the same as a good driver makes a good ride fir the passengers. What is still left of manual handwork in todays flying is the phase from final to touchdown. Most of the reasons you list contains, would not ge accepted in the flying environment I belonged to in Norway.
