  • I always imagined that every cell just started screaming

  • The cell that went up and down to the brain department is me when my mom wants me to go buy her a soda and when I get back she wants CHIPS

  • I think that in my body the keys don't even exist, it's like I have a disease, my body hurts when he feels like it, and I mean EVERY time he feels like it. :') Btw this is painfully true. (Got that, "painfully"?, ok I'll stop with the bad jokes now)

  • It's for this exact reason that the body have a shortcut. For things like this, the signals are actually has to reach all the way to the brain. The signal can just go to the spinal cord, where it can send out basic responses like "ouch, that hurts!" Without having to waste valuable nanoseconds

  • Hi! Medical lab scientist here! So pain is something that involves the nervous system, obviously, but have you ever wondered how the electrochemical signals are sent so quickly between the foot and the brain? Your nerve cells (neurons) have long stems called axons, and these are like wires that transmit the signal. However, if it were just that, nerve signals would take longer than they normally do to reach the brain. The trick the nervous system uses is something called a myelin sheath! They’re cells that wrap themselves around the axons, and the electrochemical signals essentially jump between each sheath (search up Saltatory conduction for more info). Y’all know the boost pads/dash panels from Mario kart? They’re kind of like that, but they’re placed at regularly spaced intervals from each other all over the track (or in this case, the nerve cell)! And you know what these sheaths are made of? They’re made of cells that are mostly made out of lipids aka fat! So the next time you’re sad for eating too much fat, know that at least some of the fat is good for you 😁 (that said, I think many of us, including myself, should really try to lower their cholesterol levels 😅)

    Justin RJustin R16 саат мурун
    • Also, as a side note for those who want a slightly better explanation but don’t want to search up saltatory conduction, electrical signals from wires are generally faster when in an insulating object, which is one reason why the wires in your phone charger are wrapped in plastic. Myelin sheaths essentially serve a similar purpose.
