Wandavision: What can boats and robots teach us about ourselves?
Wandavision mixed two of our favorite things: television, and the Marvel Cinematic Universe. And while it contained tons of surprises, the one that stood out to us was a philosophical debate about the Ship of Theseus carried out by two synthezoids. Let’s see if Vision’s philosophy holds up to scrutiny in this episode of A Philosopher Reacts to Wandavision.

  • wait so technically vision is now alive without the mind stone right? because the vision (the colored one) gave all his memory to the white vision.. so the white vision is now the new vision with all his memory making vision technically canonically alive?

  • This seem to be a favourite scene for many people. I also like fact Vision vs Vision was settle with a philosophical discussion but I’m not 100% onboard in this instance. Are we saying white Vision was assigned the task of stopping Vision, but he had to stop when it turned out that in a technical sense what the word ‘Vision’ refers to is a bit grey?

  • If I can't remember who I am, do I still have the same responsibilties? I think one thing the Lockean view seems to gloss over is that, regardless of whether or not we can establish a firm psychological continuity of self between our past, present, and future, there are loads of other factors to consider. One thing MacIntyre pointed out in After Virtue that I love circling back to is the reality of other people's narratives about yourself. You might not remember everything that happened to you, but other people remember things about you too. You aren't just left to your own devices in figuring out who you are, but you rely on other people to ground your place in the world. Maybe this doesn't quite apply to Vision, since they have instant recall, so long as their memories are unblocked. But even so, White Vision seems distantly aware that he has moral qualms about being used as a weapon without having a say about how his powers are directed. Is this because he has vague intimations that his memory is blocked, or is it because he has a properly functioning rational faculty that imposes those sorts of questions on him? The older I get, the more I think personal identity is largely an a posteriori fact about myself that is open to investigation for anyone concerned, and that I will need people around me to help in understanding myself. Grounding it in the faculty of memory only constitutes the possibility of forming a definite picture of an entity over time, but that's common to any object of perception.

  • Late reply to this question: In my view (and probably someone else's, I'm not well-read on the subject), questions like these first need to be understood in the sense of how they are *relevant* to the purpose in asking them. Why we want to know which ship (or neither, or both) is the true Ship of Theseus dictates how we should go about asking. For example, suppose we are concerned about ownership of and title to the ship. This is a question about legal conventions and social perceptions, and the correct answer (depending on culture or jurisdiction) is that the one with a continuity of existence is the real ship, at least so far as is relevant to our purpose in asking. Suppose that instead we wish to know something about what seas the ship sailed in during its original voyage, and have some fancy scientific test for detecting certain varieties of salt that embedded themselves in the grains of wood and using these to map its journeys. For this question, material substance is what is relevant, and the reconstructed ship is the real ship. Suppose instead we just want an accurate idea of what the Ship of Theseus looked like, and are wondering which one to examine. For this purpose, form is what is relevant, and they are both the real Ship of Theseus. To draw on The Hobbit (late-date-spoiler alert), Bilbo returns from his unexpected journey a year after his departure to discover his possessions are being auctioned off on the belief that he is dead. He quickly asserts that he is still alive, that this is his property, and everyone better give it back now. Even if he has trouble convincing people of this, he is indeed the same person who left the Shire a year ago. But it can also be remarked that he ISN'T the same person who left a year ago, because his experiences have changed him. He no longer sees the world the same, no longer suffers under the same self-limitations, no longer has the same predilections. Is he the same person who left, and is he the same person who left? Like two guests wearing identical masks at a masquerade, these are two distinct questions wearing identical words. One question is about discerning ownership, and the correct answer relevant to that purpose is that yes, he is the same. The other is about whether he has changed psychologically, and the correct answer relevant to that purpose is that he is significantly changed, though whether that makes him a different person might be a matter of degrees. In Wandavision, the question of which one's the real Vision has two purposes attached to it and it changes as the scene progresses. When Wanda's Vision first poses the problem to White Vision, it is asking whether Wanda's Vision is actually the target that White Vision has been sent to destroy, relevant to the decision of whether White Vision should continue to fight Wanda's Vision. The correct answer to this question is that yes, this is who White Vision was actually aimed at. As the scene continues, the question's purpose morphs into something akin to a koan. It becomes more of a spiritual rather than factual matter. The purpose of the question isn't about any actual answer, but to serve as a framework or touchstone for a larger exploration of how to conceptualize our reality. Relevant to this purpose there is no correct or incorrect answer. You just keep asking the question until you know more. The point of the question wasn't to decide that White Vision was the real Vision and Wanda's Vision wasn't, as they eventually did. That was just a byproduct. Instead, the question's purpose was to create openings for things like: White Vision realizing he was being used as a mindless, unthinking weapon; Wanda's Vision to come to terms with and finally express the idea that he was more dream than reality; identify what both need and are lacking; and finding a way to resolve that lack. Relevant to this purpose, you need to explore a variety of responses, each coming at the question from a different angle, to test and deepen our view of truth, without committing to any one answer.

  • "Thought" Vision giving White Vision his memories back was "Thought" Vision expressing his understanding that they both can have the memories, therefore both are the real vision, but also that his time to exist was about to end. So, White Vision was the only way he/they could live & be with Wanda. "Thought" Vision was uber heroic here, knowing it was all about to come crashing down and that his very existence was the sign that Wanda needed help....just my thoughts on the matter. ;)

  • The way I see it, White Vision won't destroy himself. Reason being is before when he sought out Vision to Terminate under command it was not the same Vision. It didn't really understand itself, and what makes Vision special is that he starts to asks questions. Once Vision convince him that he is the Real Vision and gave him the Memory. It understands Morality and Ethics. And chooses Free Will then to be under SWORD or any form of Government. The two Vision only listens to, like really LISTENS to is Wanda and Ironman. But since Ironman died and Wanda was more so a development attachment because of the Mind Stone. He is as Free Willed than ever before. More likely he'll go to Wakanda the scene where he died twice to find out the truth of his death and to understand himself even further. Wanda and White Vision will be another Story. Similar to Gamora and Starlord it almost feels like they'll start from scratch... or maybe not

  • Being someone with memory loss and told by family 'i'm not the same/son died that day', memory loss plays a part in not just your identity but what people identify you by. White Vision is now the 'closer to Real' version Vision' having the original body and updated memories. WandaVision created what she wanted Vision to be/remembered he was. I 'wanda' if White Vision has original memories from Vision's life that Wanda never saw (aka his birth). If he does then he knows more about himself than WandaVision.

Can you apply this to the consciousness, being that it potentially is just a by product of correctly formed physical matter, which makes a consciousness? If not, is the consciousness of a more abstract spiritual and unique origin, but if so are we not even unique as a person, even on the level of consciousness. At least not metaphysicaly, there are only conventional selves for the sake of language and communication. Both identity and substance are ilusions. • IMHO, White Vision is a new being, built upon the foundation of the original Vision. In effect Wanda's Vision and White Vision are both copies or clones of the original. White Vision has more than cosmetic differences, because his active mind was used as a basic template to create new programming, and even though he has (evidently) broken free from that programming, it remains part of him. He was not fully created via the Mind Stone coupled with the power of Mjolnir. He does however remember being that person. So he has a new identity to forge. Which from a story-telling pov is tres exciting!

  • Personally I think if Chomsky is right or not is a concern of looking at things from an absolute or relative view, much like how it could be said Absurdism in the absolute specifically askes to accept meaninglessness but then in the relative compels us to rebel *against* meaninglessness. On the absolute identity is a lie. Chomsky provides his argument form the context of his field, but even within the Ship of Theseus we can find this I think. When discussing the ship of Theseus we typically focus on which ship is the real one, only really questioning the two end results. But I think if we consider the words of Hericlitus "you cannot step in the same river twice" as applied to the ship of Theseus we have to take a step back and ask, 'When that first plank was removed, was it still the ship of Theseus?". Like the ever flowing and changing river, or the Michel frog, on the absolute scale the item has changed and is no longer the same thing. But on the relative scale all it really takes to be 'The Ship of Theseus' is for people to believe it is and call it that a la use is meaning. So on one side of the scale as soon as a change was made it cannot and can never again be the ship, but then on the other every step along the way and even both ships are 'The Ship of Theseus'. On the one hand frog Michael is not human Michael and can never return because a change has been made, the two are not the same thing and like Batman and Bruce Wayne can be said to not have the same identity. But on the other side as long as we call frog Michael 'Michael' than it is, because that is the identity we imbue it with. But none of that addresses where this identity comes from. Chomsky discusses it very structurally. The way I think of it in a more philosophy context is an illusion of connecting all identities from across moments via the construction of a narrative-self in conjunction with the ego, based mainly in the stories we tell ourselves about the memories we carry with us. BTW, that thought came while watching Jared discuss narrative self. So, hopefully that's a good thing. But what do you think WiseCrack? Can we accept that identity is a lie while holding view of continued identity that tries to make sense of our experience and provide a useful framework for considering what identity is? Or is transmuting the concept of identity to the paradigm ends of absolute and relative to better understand the whole useless hogwash that only makes it more confusing?

It's like people who create famous art by memory, it is not the real art piece.

He also doesn't have memories of Vision and his personality was formed by Wanda. So he is a copy of what Vision was. Using ships, the Titanic was destroyed and now the Titanic II is being made in China. The Titanic II is a replica of the Titanic and will never be the Titanic.
