Due to a manual copyright claim by UMG (that I'm still working to resolve) some of the music in this video is either muted or replaced with some of the most hilarious stock music KGworld would let me use.
If you'd like to see what this video was supposed to look/sound like, you can check it out here:

In this video I freak out about Cats holding hands

Also, I'd like to make a special mention of Catilin Koi's video "Let's Talk About CATS".
I wish I'd done my job a little better and found this video before I made my own, and cited her multiple times because she does a MUCH better job than I do at explaining the plot to the original stage version of Cats, especially everything with Grizabella at the end of the show.
if anything about this video has made you excited about learning about the original Cats then I cannot recommend her video enough

The article penned by the audio leads on Cats
I cannot overstate how much of a fascinating read this is, you owe it to yourself to read it!
Part 1 of the above article with some interesting insights to the film industry
(I liked the part where they lucked out with the forehead-mounted mics not interfering with the dancers' somersaults)
Luciano Berio's Sequenza III performed by Laura Catrani (I love this performance!)
because of course Cats has it's own wiki
The Toronto Star article about the Orchestra having to work up to 2 months before the film released
John Cage's Water Walk
The Greenport Peter Pan Fiasco
Maria Joao Pires prepared a different Mozart concerto to the one that was performed
The same thing happened to pianist Tianxu An in the finals of a Tchaikovsky Competition in 2019
Ray Chen breaks a string during a performance (and the concertmaster doesn't flinch when he has to swap violins like a pro)
The metal pole modern dance thing that we've all seen a million times
If I've missed anything please let me know
Seriously, if I've used a clip from your video in this video and I haven't put it here please contact me!

  • Ok, I didn't watch the Cats movie, because I love the original and I find the CGI make-up super creepy... But I distinctly remember Rum Tum Tugger in the original singing about how Old Deutoronomy had many wives (not at the same time, I assume) and how HE had many children, the fan-theory being that Rum Tum Tugger, Munkustrap and perhaps even Macavity are his sons. So, why is Judi Dench playing Deutoronomy (if she is indeed playing that role). Also apparently in this review there were scenes shown from the movie with Munkustrap and Victoria, but Munkus lacks any of the distinctive make-up from the show, so I would never be able to tell that it was him. And let us not not forget that in the show he defeats Macavity! He is also the one who introduces many of the cats, he is the narrator, he has to stand out... The final, disturbing thing for me is that in the original the actors are wearing real make-up, wigs, costumes, etc. In the movie it seems to be CGI and as a result when I was watching the actress who is playing Jenny Anydots dance, I had the feeling that I was looking at a naked person, because the make-up is not there in reality. And it's weird. Did they do it, so the cat ears could move? There is nothing wrong with traditional stage make-up. As I am watching the video: wait, that chocolate-coloured cat is supposed to Macavity???? What the hell????

  • I'm sure this has been commented on somewhere, but the film's Mingojerrie and Rumpleteazer inexplicably (and apparently this wasn't Lord Andy's decision) uses the original West End 1981 version. It's not just missing the different time signature part, it's a completely different melody. For Broadway they rewrote the song (for the better, I think), which at some point was taken up in London as well, though there have been changes over the years (if the characters sing their own song or not, etc). So, yeah, while Cats has had many smallish changes depending on the production over the years (the biggest being another change for Broadway replacing The Ballad of Billy McGraw with an opera aria pastiche in Growltiger), I'dnever heard of people going back to the original M&R... So very odd.

  • Touch is an important part of social interaction. It is a sign of acceptance, solidarity, offers comfort... Humans need touchto be healthy, a child not touched dies even if properly fed and all. It is wierd that it was turned into a thing solely accosiated with sex and only allowed in a couple or between very small children and their parents..

  • I’m wanting to become a fan of this musical, I’ve watched most of the songs on KGworld, I just bought the 1998 movie, but I can’t remember half of their names. I know the main ones (Munkustrap, Old Deuteronomy, Jemima, Grizabella, ones like that), but how the hell do I learn the other ones names. Some people in the comment are able to pick out the ones dancing in the background (oh there’s Demeter). Which one’s Demeter? And who is Etcetera? This is so confusing. I’ve never been confused about the plot (it’s really simple) but I’m just super confused on learning their names.

  • Funny enough, I think them forcing you to mute some parts of the movie in this review (thank you, bullsh*t copyright claims) actually works to their detriment. Without hearing their version in comparison to the stage musical, we're forced to assume the worst of their performances, making the film seem even worse than it already is. So if they're trying to protect their brand, they're doing a really sh*tty job of it

Dame Judy Dench, bless her, but she definitely doesn't have the vocal oomph for old Deuteronomy. and also the singer for Victoria, she's trying, but she just doesn't have the ability to hold the absolute highs in some of the songs, making her sound shaky.

  • people who work in tv and movies don't understand stage musicals. that's a simple fact that i think we all need to realize and internalize. your point here, about how all the best numbers in the movie were sung and preformed by dancers? that's exactly it, people who have taken any sort of organized dance class (like my several years of amateur ballet) understand the need to keep on a beat, "five, six, seven, eight" exactly, i still slip into that tempo when counting sometimes, because it was so ingrained in us. dancers understand almost as well as musicians the need to keep on a tempo, they understand how crucial it is to keep your choreography on beat, because without that structure, most songs fall apart. you should be able to tap your foot to a song in a musical, especially one that focuses as heavily on dance as cats the musical does. movie and tv directors and actors don't understand that, they see giving people freedom to do what they want with the music as a choice that will make the movie more artsy, or better, but it doesn't, exactly as you said, all the dancers who heard that exchanged looks with each other and said "um, no thanks, let's stick with the normal backing track and a clicker please." and then they /killed/ it. tv and movie are very different from stage musical, and not enough people understand that.

  • I actually slightly disagree with you on Victoria.. i think Victoria is an important cat in the musical, why im not exactly sure yet but the musical makes it obvious; she’s queen victorias cat and named after her so shes considered royalty, she has quite a few close ups on her, sits closely to Old Deuteronomy, the mating scene and lastly it’s her who has the courage to finally touch Grizabella yes Grizabella was supported by Jemima, but why would they make the royal, white cat who represents innocence be the first one to touch her? That can’t be a mistake. HOWEVER that being said, that makes what the movie did with her EVEN WORSE she’s supposed to be ROYALTY not being DUMPED OFFas an orphan, omg.

(The panel also lamented that Cavill as Superman was wasted with such bad writing.) ...I was bound to watch this video after watching a review including complements towards the score, as I keep coming back to hear this explanation of the trainwreck that is Cats (in terms of audio... there's a lot more to be said about why the CGI looks bad. I'm not sure if I pity the orchestra or the CGI artists more.)

  • It's a misconception that the VFX of this movie were bad. The CONCEPT was bad. The problem was in the high-level art direction and visual choices made at the top. There was *nothing wrong* with the craft and technical skill behind the visual effects. VFX artists getting thrown under the bus by the mediocre performers (Corden, Wilson) who starred in this movie just added insult to injury. Much like you give credit to the heroic efforts made by the musicians and dancers to do what they could with the material despite everything, the same credit should be extended to the VFX crew whose thankless task it was to try and make *any of this* work visually. Clearly they did not succeed, but not for any lack of effort (or skill) on their part. To paraphrase: "The best visual effects cannot make a terrible visual idea look good."

No offense to anyone who plays Victoria, but if any role needed to be cut Victoria is literally only there to be the white cat. Jemima is the only kitten in the cast and could easily have fit the "abandoned and welcomed" storyline they were going for. Alternatively, if they wanted to make the story more interesting (clearly they didn't, but let's just say) they could have explored how generally white cats with blue eyes are deaf, and given Victoria a feel good story about discovering dance in a community centered around song (A la happy feet) thereby explaining why she doesn't have any spoken lines.

  • Excellent analysis of CATS. As someone who has Toured Nationally as a performer with this show as well as performed it regionally, I fear they used the "Regional Theatre" score (which, for whatever reason, has Mungo/Rump adjusted in 4/4 and the trio in "Gumbie Cat" written as you've pointed out) rather than the "Tour/Broadway" score (which has Mungo/Rump in 7/8 and the trio in "Gumbie Cat" written properly as 3 part harmony.) Why they did this (and all of the other errors) I do not know.

  • Unless you are either using trained theatre and Broadway actors OR give your show the same grueling rehearsal that a show of that caliber would require, DON’T. DO. LIVE. SINGING! The kinds of things that the actors are given control over as far as leading the music would require each actor to be musically intelligent, which is so far beyond being a good singer. It doesn’t work! It’s like that improv game/acting warmup where you look at a person and try to say the same thing at the same time by following their mouth.
